The gap it fills
the act of turning back toward GoD with the whole self — not guilt-feeling (which may not produce turning), not remorse (which is backward-looking without the turning), but the specific physical-directional act of reorientation: the person who was moving away turns and moves toward GoD again. Hebrew teshuvah (תְּשׁוּבָה — return, turning back; from shuv = to turn/return; the whole body turns) and Greek metanoia (μετάνοια — change of mind/orientation; meta + nous = trans-mind, the whole cognitive-spiritual orientation shifted) together name the two dimensions: teshuvah is the bodily-directional turning; metanoia is the inner-cognitive reorientation. Arabic tawbah (توبة — repentance-return; same directional theology). Together: the act of redirecting the whole person — body, orientation, intention — back toward GoD. Teshuvance fills the gap between guilt (a feeling), remorse (backward-looking grief), and the positive act of turning that is worship.
