The gap it fills
the act of standing between two parties — specifically, standing between a creature and GoD on behalf of the creature, speaking for the creature before the divine. Not petition (asking for something for oneself), not prayer in general, but the specific act of the mediator-figure who places themselves in the gap between. Hebrew pālal (פָּלַל — to intercede, to pray, to judge/mediate; the root of tefillah/prayer itself; to stand between and adjudicate) names the act structurally as standing-between-as-judging. Greek entynchanō (ἐντυγχάνω — to fall in with, to intercede; Romans 8:26-34 uses this for both the Spirit's and Christ's intercession) names the act as meeting-with-on-behalf-of. Arabic shafā'ah (شَفَاعَة — intercession; from shafa'a = to double/add; to add one's weight to another's petition; the intercessor doubles the petition's weight by adding themselves) names the act as weight-addition. Together: the worship-act of placing oneself in the gap for another — the structural act that makes priesthood, prophecy, and advocacy possible.
