The gap it fills
the act of covering / closing / making-a-rupture-disappear — not punishment, not payment, not erasure, but the specific theological act by which a break in relationship is covered so that it no longer stands between the parties. Hebrew kipper (כִּפֶּר — to cover, to atone; the Yom Kippur mechanism; "he covered it") names the act as covering-the-rupture. Arabic kaffārah (كَفَّارَة — expiation, covering; from kafara = to cover) independently arrives at the same metaphor. Greek hilasmos (ἱλασμός — propitiation/expiation; "the cover") adds the mercy-seat dimension. These three converge on: atonement is not punishment-transferred but gap-covered; not ledger-balanced but wound-healed-over; not anger-appeased but relationship-restored-by-covering. Kipporance names this act across traditions.
