The gap it fills
the act of calling the divine presence to descend and take up residence in a specific place, moment, or person — not petition (asking for something), not address (speaking to GoD), but the liturgical act of summoning-the-divine-presence-into-the-present. The Greek epiclesis (ἐπίκλησις) names one instance of this; the Sanskrit āvāhana (inviting-the-deity-to-inhabit) names another; the Hebrew qara (calling-by-name-to-invoke-presence) names a third. All three describe the same structural act: the worshipper uses trained speech, correct name, and proper authority to call the divine into immediate presence. Epiclance names this act across traditions: the calling-down-of-presence through invocation.
